Another state football champion, another close loss.
Host Indianola fell to 1-2 this season after losing 21-19 Friday to Western Dubuque at Epworth, the defending Class 3A state champions. The Indians lost to 4A champion Dowling Catholic in a season opener.
“They made the plays when they needed to,” Indianola coach Eric Kluver said. “They’re the defending state champs. They know how to win.”
Western Dubuque (2-1) took a 21-10 lead midway through the third quarter on a rainy night.
Indianola rallied with Stephen Stark’s second field goal of the game with 1:15 left in the third quarter. Jacob Darr returned a fumble 83 yards for a touchdown with 6:46 left in the fourth quarter.
A two-point pass failed to end Indianola’s attempt at a tie.
Indianola’s Kael Kolarik rushed for 114 yards, including a 2-yard touchdown on his team’s game-opening drive.
Western Dubuque’s Garrett Baumhover rushed for a 45-yard touchdown and threw a 51-yard touchdown pass to Tommy DeSollar. Spencer Zinn added a 33-yard touchdown run.
“We just have to be more consistent,” Kluver said.
Stark, a soccer player who came out for football for the first time last year, kicked field goals of 35 and 26 yards.
The junior said he was talked into playing football by some Indians who also competed in both sports.
“They kind of brought me in and talked to me,” Stark said.
He’s also now six-for-six on extra points.
“It feels great to help the team,” Stark said.
CJ Kuehl passed for 50 yards and rushed for 31 more.
Fellow quarterback Brady Blake threw for 48 yards, including a 35-yarder to Mark Pepper. John McGinnis added 45 yards receiving.
Friday’s original opponent was Des Moines Lincoln. The Railsplitters were not able to compete due to the Des Moines school district’s decision to go to an online learning schedule. Fellow Des Moines school Roosevelt, which was scheduled to play at Indianola next week, also appears to be off the schedule.
Instead, Indianola will host Urbandale (3-0).
