The Senate passed my E-Verify bill, Senate File 516, with a 33-14 vote, with 3 absent, on April 3. All but one Republican voted for the bill along with four Democrats. I have written about this bill before and you probably remember that E-Verify is an easy way for employers to check to see if people they are hiring are in the country legally and can be legally hired. The biggest problem with the bill is that using it is voluntary. Even so, about 3,300 Iowa employers do use it now. It took some work but I was pleased with the substantial margin we finally obtained. The bill’s future in the House is uncertain. Since we are past the relevant funnel date the bill is likely dead in the House this year. We will work on it next year. Hopefully those who have an opinion on the bill will contact their State Representative. You can be sure the lobbyists will.
