Joseph Wachenheim, a saloon owner in Indianola, came to America from Germany looking for “Better Times.” Arriving middle-aged and alone, he’s listed as an Iowa State Capitol stonecutter in the 1870 census. He likely attended the cornerstone dedication the following year.
