Mary Scheurenbrand, 81, of Mitchell, SD, passed away peacefully Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, November 18, at Bittner Funeral Chapel with a visitation one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in White Lake, SD.
Mary Ann Scheurenbrand was born on January 13, 1941 in White Lake, South Dakota. Mary was the youngest of seven children to Frederick and Bertha Bogenhagen.
After marrying Roger Scheurenbrand, their careers took them to Indianola, Iowa where they built a life and a family. Mary retired from EMC Insurance Company after serving as a Data Administrator for over 25 years. Soon after retiring, Mary and Roger returned to Mitchell to enjoy their golden years. Mary and Roger just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in August.
A quiet, thoughtful, and loving woman, Mary was a friend and confidant to those who knew her and an exceptional coffee buddy to anyone who enjoyed a “good cup” as much as she did. Never demanding and always hesitant to ask others for anything she could do herself. Mary loved to garden, work on crossword puzzles and word searches, and never gave up on the idea that someday, when she least expected it, Publisher’s Clearing House would show up at her door with a balloon bouquet and a big check (an addiction she shared with her cherished nieces Alice and Vicki). Mary’s hair was always perfectly neat and manicured, just like her nails, and while she didn’t necessarily love to cook, her kids fondly remember her big Thanksgiving dinners with one turkey, one pie, and at least six Jell-O salads.
In this brightly spinning world, Mary’s irrepressible, gracious spirit was a vibrant example of how to live life. Her quirky chuckle was unmistakable, and her spirit has forever left a permanent imprint on our lives.
Mary is remembered in love by her husband, Roger of Mitchell, SD; sons, David of Minneapolis, MN, James (Staci) of Indianola, IA, and Steven (Jenny) of Indianola, IA; grandchildren, Adam Scheurenbrand and Joseph Scheurenbrand of Indianola, IA; sister, Eleanor Gieseman of White Lake, SD; and other nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
